Yurts are our eco-friendly solution to a cabin - they are strong and wind-resistent (because of their round design) and require minimal materials - some wood, cloth, and a modest platform to sit on. The round nature of the structure keeps air from stagnating in corners and many say the "flow" of air is much fresher than standard square or rectangular structures (but be warned they do get warm inside on a sunny day).
Turning the Yurt Green:
Creative & Eco-Friendly ways we Furnished, Designed, & Maintain our Yurt
Used the yurt's shipping crate wood to build the yurt's closet (instead of putting the lower quality wood in a landfill, like often happens).
Also reused wood from the crate to build most of the kitchen cabinets.
Built a coffee table from a fallen ohia log on the property.
Refurbished the bean bag chair, chest, & chairs from a neighbor that was moving & was going to put the old furniture in a landfill.
Used our solar power system for the tools & crafts used to build the yurt.
Intentionally built the yurt low to the ground in order to minimize wood use for the foundation structure.
Avoided wood intensive additions like building stairs or a porch/lanai - and instead used the natural surroundings & lava to create a private outdoor hangout area.
Made a guestbook out of a fallen coconut instead of paper.
Decorated the outside of the yurt with natural rocks from the property, fallen coconuts, & organic plants rather than buying manufactured decorations.
Only use biodegradable & eco-friendly cleaning products.
Only wash linens & towels once for each guest (unless otherwise needed)
Only use 100% cotton linens & towels (Cotton items do not add VOCs to the air in guestrooms; synthetic fabrics are not sustainable and use petrochemicals).
