Green & Eco-Friendly Accommodation in Maui, Hawaii
Don't just go on vacation - experience it
Maui's accommodation is on average the most expensive of all the islands. In fact, it's down right difficult to find budget accommodation there. Camping is available but Maui also has the fewest good options for camping. On a positive note, there are quite a few options for Eco-Resort type accommodations. We can't specifically recommend one as we've never been able to afford them ourselves - but they are there!

Lova Lava Land is also forming a "Hawaii Green Travel Network." This is one of our public service projects for 2009 and we hope to put together a nice list of recommended Maui green accommodations, Maui green tour operators, and Maui green travel businesses to share with green travelers (enough green yet?). Look out for that in the future.
Some other Maui green accommodation tips from Lova Lava Land:
Owner managed and rented condos/vacation rentals can be a green option (and friendlier on the wallet) if operated with eco-friendly ideals. At the very least, you would be supporting local ownership. Ask if they utilize alternative power or have special conservation efforts.
Beware of some of the big resorts advertising as an "eco-resort." We know of a few on Maui that are clearly only using this as a marketing trick. At least our definition of "eco-resort" doesn't only mean not washing your towels every day.... If you are a budget traveler, you most likely will not be considering these options anyway.
