Airline Information
Flights from the Mainland to Hawaii:
Several airlines offer direct flights from the mainland to the Big Island (Kona or Hilo airport).
Yet, most flights from the mainland will first stop in Honolulu.
Check our favorite budget airline websites for the best deals.
Tip to possibly save money: Compare prices on tickets that take you from the mainland through Honolulu then to the Big Island VERSUS buying 1 ticket from the mainland to Honolulu then another inter-island ticket from Honolulu to one of the two airports on the Big Island. Depending on the current inter-island sales, you may save some money by buying 2 separate tickets (1 from the mainland to Honolulu and 1 from Honolulu to the Big Island). Also compare buying flights straight to the Big Island versus going through Honolulu.
Inter-island Flights Between Hawaiian Islands:
There are two major airports on the Big Island - Kona on the west coast and Hilo on the east coast. You can easily get to Lova Lava Land from either airport. During peak dates Hilo may have more availability than Kona.
All the major inter-island carriers fly to both airports.
Hawaiian Airlines is our favorite carrier because of it's on-time record, safety record, good prices, and general professionalism. Even if it ends up being a little more than other airlines (but it's not always if you book early enough), we personally ALWAYS try to fly Hawaiian.
There are several other carriers: Go! Airlines and the very small Mokulele Airlines & Island Air (these last two have very small planes - not for those who are nervous about flying).
Aloha Airlines went out of business in early 2008 so don't bother looking for them anymore. Go! Airlines is currently running flights under bankruptcy so keep that risk in mind if you are buying tickets far in advance (they could cancel flights without refund at any point).
Tip to possibly save money: check prices and car rental rates for flying into Kona VERSUS Hilo airport. Although average prices are pretty much the same, sometimes certain day or times may be cheaper in one city versus the other.
Ferry
Currently, there is NO ferry service to the Big Island of Hawaii.
A new inter-island ferry service opened in August 2007 between Oahu & Maui (Hawaii Superferry).
This ferry service is expected to open Big Island operations in 2009. They are targeting May 2009.
