The Perfect Couple - Hawaii and Romance
So much of Hawaii 's appeal is tied to aloha , affection and love, that
it's surprising to find there's no word in the Hawaiian language for romance.
Hard to believe, too, because if ever a destination inspired romance, it's
Hawaii. The islands are exotic, magical and beautiful - just like being in
love!
When asked to "think of Hawaii," couples think of strolling barefoot on the
beach during a beautiful sunset, of a dinner cruise and slow dancing under the
stars, of sharing a mai tai , enjoying a luau , and the fresh
fragrance of island flowers. Hawaii and romance is a timeless pairing that
spans all generations and draws couples from all walks of life. It also
explains why the islands consistently rank so highly when people are asked to
name the world's most romantic destination.
Hollywood has done its part to endorse Hawaii as a setting for romance and
love. In 1953, Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr ignited the big screen in From
Here to Eternity with a passionate kiss while rolling in the warm surf
of a golden Hawaiian beach. Movie kissing hasn't been the same since. Fans of
Elvis Presley are quick to remember the wedding scene from Kauai in Blue Hawaii
as one of the highpoints of the King's film career. More recently, the hit
movie 50 First Dates used the charms and relaxed ambiance of Hawaii as
a backdrop for its romantic storyline. Again and again, Hollywood 's message
comes through like Cupid's arrow in spring: romance thrives in Hawaii!
Rromance is an essential component of Hawaii's visitor industry. Romance
couples - especially honeymooners - come for the trip of a lifetime. Couples
also enjoy coming to the islands for anniversaries, especially those who
honeymooned here. Most come back to re-live the fond memories and many reaffirm
their love with island-themed vow renewals. But all of them come back for
romance and the spirit of ho'onanea , which means in Hawaiian, "to
pass the time in pleasure."
